In Response To: Urgent Notice! Paypal Fraud (Bob Silber)
Those of you who receive AuctionHints Ezine will recognize this post as a true threat. Literally anyone could have fallen for this one...it's just that good.
Think about it. First they tell you there is a problem. And then low and behold they happen to have the solution. But wait, they want to make sure that you know they are "really Paypal" so they calm you a little by telling you to "look for the "https". This scam is one the of the best I have seen. Mr. Silber indicated that he too was impressed and almost fooled.
Bottom line...like I said in my article...
NONE OF THE ONLINE SERVICES WILL EVER ASK FOR YOUR INFO. They already have it. They have a master account after all and thus they don't need your info. And they won't ask you to verfiy anything other than your email address. If you RECEIVE ANY EMAIL asking for your personal info DO NOT GIVE IT TO THEM!!!!
Here are the steps to take:
1. Report it to the site from which is supposedly came. Usually support@ will get your report to the right person. You will need to forward it to them in whole.
2. Consider reporting it to the Feds. They take such matters extremely seriously and make actually look into the matter for potential prosecution.
3. Beware of follow-up emails. They may send you a more urgent message that will make it sound like it's your last chance to reply. Don't fall for it! And if they suspect that you are the one who reported them don't be surprised if they send you some emails with viruses. (Not to worry...nothing out there Norton or McAfee cannot handle) Just DON'T OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT....EVER...UNLESS YOU ASKED FOR AND ARE EXPECTING IT!
Th crooks are savvy folks. They want your money. They are not going to be nice about it. So long as you use common sense however you should be OK.
Thank you Bob for your post and the warning. When I first saw it all I could say was "Wow...they have REALLY gotten good".
Take care and stay safe all,
Jim Wilson
