I would venture that your best bet would be to contact a tax consultant on that one. I could make educated guesses based on my own experience but it would not be from an "expert" in taxes.
Since this will eventually deal with the IRS it's best to get the advice from someone who is a "true expert". If it's someone who does your taxes chances are they won't charge you.
I can tell you this much. I pay taxes on my sales as income. If you are going to sell on eBay as more than just a hobby and treat it like a business, that's what I was told by my accountant to do.
Sorry I am not able to assist more on this one. But it is an AWESOME question...
