We got shut down!

Hi Jim,

I work for a local sporting goods store. Slowly but surely we have been going more towards selling on the web. In fact, last month we did $60,000 on ebay, with tons of positive feedback from the buyers and no negatives.

My job specifically is to build and manage the email marketing dept. I have been extremely careful with permission. I realize that if I get one complaint as a spammer, I could be shut down by my ISP. Most of our emails come from our local marketplace, where people can sign up at the store level.

However, I sent out an email to all the people that bought from us on ebay, inviting them to join our email club (I assumed that since they bought from us, that gives us permission to send them a follow-up email). I didn't just add them, they had to reply to the message to subscribe. Obviously, one person took exception to my invitation and complained to ebay. Ebay shut us down, and now has cost us well over $10,000 in sales.

Now my boss has told me to toast all the ebay emails, even the ones who said yes. I've got huge egg on my face. Any ideas on how to fix this?
