If launching an auction site is Google's actual intent (and the rumors of this have been floating around for a few months now) it will prove to be interesting. Google is probably the one Internet entity that would have a chance of actually competing with eBay.
But they will need to insure they "get it right" from day one, which they don't have the best record of doing, or it may be a tough road.
Historically, Google doesn't have the best record for getting rid of the bugs before launching a new product or service. A good example is their recent launch of Google Analytics which doesn't seem to be working for anyone so far.
When I followed Natalie's link to the article there were 30 comments following the article. Twenty-nine of them were from people who are completely negative about eBay and sound to me like chronic whiners. It's these whiners that will make up the majority of their initial users because most of eBay's satisfied sellers will wait to see how things go.
If Google doesn't have it right from day one these initial users are going to be all over Google just like they are all over eBay now.
I hope they can pull it off. It would create a much more competitive marketplace.
